Microsoft Office Update Error

Problem

You are trying to install or uninstall a patch associated with Ms Office but it fails showing any of the following errors:

  • 17031-Invalid baseline (Windows Installer)
  • 17302-Applying patch (MSoCache)
  • 17025-Patch already installed (file(s) version got updated)
  • 17028-No product installed for contained patch - Already Intalled / upgrade code missing.
  • 17044-Installer was unable to run detection for this package.
  • OfficeUpdateError: Required patch does not apply to the machine.

Cause

This might be due to missing installer files. Deletion of MSI files might take place due to any of the following reasons::

  • You might have deleted MSI files due to space constraints.
  • Third Party cleanup tools might have corrupted the installer files
  • Installation of anti-virus might have caused deletion of files
  • It might be because of the availability of the registry key of older Office versions in the machine after its uninstallation

Resolution

Here are some of the methods to troubleshoot the issue:

All Office patches are failing with the above errors in your machine

  1. If the Office version with the failing updates is not used in the machines, then check if any registry keys related to this Office version are used in these machines by navigating to Registry Editor > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE > click F3 and search for the registry keys.
    • If there are such unwanted registry keys related to this Office version, delete them, scan the machines again, and check the results. (Note: Our Office detection logic is based on registry keys and values, if any Office registry key is available in the machine, then the respective Office version's latest updates are detected as missing).
    • If no registry key is available, then contact our support team with the affected machine's agent logs for detailed analysis.
  2. If the Office version with the failing updates is used in the machines, then it is most probably an environment related issue. It is possible that some Office related installer files maybe corrupt/missing in the machine. If this is the case, then manual installation of the updates will also probably fail with the same error so install any of the updates manually in a machine and check the results. If manual installation also fails, do the following:
    • Check the MS logs available in %temp% directory to find the reason for the issue.
    • Try repairing the office application and retry the installation.
    • If the issue persists, uninstall and re-install the office application.
    • If the issue still persists, check with the vendor for conclusive analysis of the problem.

Issue is with only one particular Office patch
